As you probably already know, most headphones can’t play the bass the way you want it. Most headphones advertise how they play the super bass, but when you use them it’s nothing close. I love my bass and want something that will make my teeth shake when I use them. What kind of headphones actually do that though?
Headohones that are designed for a DJ have awesome bass. If sound is your profession then you have got to have the deep bass. The headsets they use sound just like big time speaker systems. When it comes to bass, you really only have two options. Either go really big or really tiny.
The new tiny earbud headphones have really good bass. The cool thing about them is nobody can hear what you are listening to even though the bass is thumping your brain. These tiny earbud headphones work by doing two things. The first thing they do is isolate extrernal noise. The cellular foam that surrounds the part that goes in your ear is very sound absorbent and springy. It molds to and fills out the inside of your ear. It makes an airtight seal and the tiny vibrations produced make your ear think the sounds are much larger than in actuality. They are so close to your inner ear that not much movement is need from the diaphragm of the drivers to produce loud volume. You don’t get any distorted sound like you do with bigger more traditional speakers.
Opposite of the earbud headphones are the very large bass headphones. They usually fit over the ears and seal out noise by covering and isolating the whole ear. They have pretty big diaphrags and can produce some big, heavy bass. The downside is their size. You can’t hide these while wearing them at work and they are nearly impossible to jog with. They also can’t be worn for very long because some users sweat around the ears with the heavy cups pressing on your skin.
Either option, are great if you want your headphones to pump nice bass.
Surround sound headphones are a worthy investment if you play a lot of games on your PC. Most gamers have only been using the typical two speaker setup. You are missing out! If you use a good set of headphones that have surround sound, you can pick up the minute details of the game that will make your play better. You can actually hear enemies sneaking up behind you in certain games and from what direction.
Some headphones, with all of the built in electronics, can be a little heavy and may not be for eveyone. I have actually been accused of cheating because I was able to get that much better while using the surround sound. If you are serious about your gaming like me, then you should use every available technology to your advantage. I don’t think that is cheating and you shouldn’t either.
Let me give you some technical details of the better surround sound headphones. Some models have discrete drivers that mimic the full components a surround sound system. They replicate the middle front speaker, called the center speaker for dialog. To the side of the drivers will be front speakers which output the normal stereo sound that we are accustomed to hearing. Then we have two rear speakers for the surround sound and finally a dedicated subwoofer for the lowest bass sounds.
The newest models of headphones actually have all of those little speakers built into the oversized ear cups. If you carefully open up the ear piece you will see a center driver, a front driver, a surround driver and a sub driver. Spacing of the drivers allows enough separation of sound to mimic the sound of a home theatre loudspeaker system.
I know what you are thinking, do they actually work? Yes! There are tons of reviews stating how well they work. The downside is their weight. They are heavier than other headphones. Another great feature is these headphones will usually come with a multi-channel usb audio adapter. You can just plug it into the computer’s usb port and it will drive all of the speaker channels right to the surround headset.
You’ve probably worn a set of headphones before. You know that the effect of listening to sound coming from the center of your head is not nearly as good as listening to music coming from two high quality loudspeakers. Bad headphones will separate the sound coming from each ear making for artificial sounding music. You want a good set of headphones that provide a sense of depth from your music. Surround sound headphones are the answer.
Built into these headphones are amplifiers and sound processors. Thesesound processors recreate the missing cues that give the ears a sense of space. If you have a good pair, you should be surrounded by sound. They are perfect for watching movies early in the morning when you don’t want to wake the neighbors or wife. Movie soundtracks will be amazing and you’ll be able to hear things coming in from all directions. I laugh at it now but I’ve actually ducked before wearing these headphones while watching the movie.
I’m sure you want to know how much will these headphones cost me? The good news is there is inexpensive units that work very good. If you have the cash just laying around, go ahead and spend a couple of hundred dollars. You can go to a Best Buy or similar store and ask to try out the headphones while watching a movie in the theatre they have.
More expensive units even come with Dolby decoder boxes and coaxial/digital inputs. These decoders work by decoding the Dolby surround sound and mixing it into two channel for the headset that come with the decoder. Cheaper unit have all components built into theheadphones but are also heavier than other units. Some people don’t like having the extra weight in the headsets due to the extra electronics inside the unit.
The best way is to try them out at a retail store and then search online for the best price. No matter what type of surround headphones you get, you will be amazed at the difference in sound quality and depth compared to regular headphones.
For me the most annoying part of listening to music on headphones is background noise. I have to commute to work on the train and there is a lot of background noise. Noise from traffic, noise from the train, noise from other passengers yelling into cell phones at 7:00 AM, you know what I’m talking about.
At home this noise can be lawnmowers, screaming kids, air conditionerss, fans, the television in the background, etc. There are endlless sources of noise that can ruin our listening experience. Because of this problem, noise cancellation heapphones were invented. Now all we have to do is flick a switch on the headphones and suddely all goes quiet. It’s great to listen to out favorite music without background noises getting in the way.
Noise cancellation headphones are a great theory but in actually using them, experiences differ. The are good noise cancellation headphones and bad ones. The bad ones really sound terrible and ony mute the outside noise a little bit and require a lot of battery power. For a pair to work perfectly, all of the components must be in order. The lower the quality on any one component, the less effective the noise cancellation will be.
Lets talk about how these headphones work. Basically the headset has a small circuit inside it that samples the outside noise. It then creates the exaxct opposite noise and plays it through the headphones along with the music. You do not hear anything but pure music because the outside sound is mixed with the noise caneling circuit noise and they are supposed to effectively cancel each other out.
Headsets differ in how effective they actually are. Another point worth saying is that the higher price of some units doesn’t neccessarily mean better performance. Some are really expensive but do not work better than cheaper units. I only suggest trying them on at a store first. If you like them and they work, then shop online to buy for the best price.
The last point to consider when buying a pair of noise cancellation headphones is to check how long the batteries last. If you aren’t getting at least twenty plus hours on one set of batteries, you will be spending a lot of extra money. Also condier rechargeable batteries if the set you like the most requires a lot of juice.
I just bought a new mp3 players, so do I need amplified headphones? There are many applications where you might want some extra power and help from an amp. The mp3 player bought is really small and only runs on one AAA battery. There isn’t a whole lot of output power to drive headphones.Cheaper mp3 players include high efficiency headsets that sound really bad. They sound bad because the high frequencies which make the sound more tinny require less power to reproduce. These cheap mp3 players are never able to power a good set of headphones if you want some bass and volume.
In order to fix this problems you want to buy an external powered amplifier or a pair of headphones with the amp built into them. This gives you alot more flexibility. When you put an amplifier in the loop, you can get loud volumes again and bring back some heavy bass.
You are probably needing amplified headphones on your computer aswell. My sound card had lousy speaker driver. This is because it had a low current output that would cause a lot of distortion at high volumes, over 10% even. I hate this distortion and it is pretty obvious and really ruins my music. I got some amplied headphones and now I get high sound levels at very low distortion.Adding any ampliefier to the loop helps the playing device by elminating distortion and playing the much at real high level cleanly.
Amplified headphones are much better today on power. You won’t use as many batteries as you might have thought. I get over 100 hours of play time on a single set of batteries! If you use the headphones on the train an hour a day, that means you’ll get 3 months on one set of batteries. Pretty good deal. I use rechargeable batteries because they cost less in the long term. I leave on set at home and the other at work.
RF headphones are known commonly as wireless headphones. The RF abbreviation stands for radio frequency. These headphones have a transmitter and receiver which emit radio waves to trasmit the sound all over your house of office. I like to describe it as having your own mini radio station in your house and only you can receive the transmission.
The headsets are wireless so you don’t have worry about wires tripping you up and you have more freedome when moving around your house. The main negative is the headphones requires batteries. So keep two sets of rechargeables in the house for when you need them.
Wireless headphones are built with one of three technologies. There are versions that use light instead of radio to transmit the sound. Known as IR headphones, and IR stands for infrared light. The drawback is IR headphones only work in the room where the light from the transmitter is visible. Think of your television remote.
For total freedome you should get RF headphones and use the radio waves. Some RF headphones are even bluetooth compatible. If the laptop or notebook you are on now as a bluetooth wireless adapter in it, you’ll be able to connect your computer and listen to music with your wireless headphones. Bluetooth is still new and I expect it will grow in popularity and become a main source of wireless headphone technology in a few years.
RF headphones can not be beat for freedom, range, and motion. You can even relax on the deck in the sun while enjoying music coming from a player located in your house. Once you try these out you will love the range of motion and I’m sure you’ll find tons of new uses for them.
I work from home all the time. My wife has the tv on all the time because she actually likes the background noise. I had to buy her a set of tv headphones so I didn’t have to listen to the tv while trying to work.I bought her a wireless set. If you tv is located close to your couch or bed you can get ones with a cord.I choose wireless for her because she likes to walk around the house with the tv on.
These new wireless headsets are very lightweight and obvisously not having a cord to trip over is a nice bonus. You will want to be rechargeable batteries because the cordless option does use some power.
If you can’t tell, there are two basic types of tv headphones. Cordless and those with a cord. They have a few other features that regular headphones do not have. A great feature is they have independent volume and balance controls. With this you can adjust the volume in the one ear and make it louder than the other. This is great if you have something like an ear infection on one side.
Some headphones still have monophonic playback. These are for television sets with one audio output so you may need this feature. Most every new television made today have stereo outputs so monophonic playback will be obsolete soon.
Wireless tv headphones can in IR and RF versions.IR is short for infrared, and uses the same technology used in your remote control. Some people like not having radio waves emitted from a headset. The negative sie to theis technology is you need a line of sight between the transmitter and receiver. So if your headphones are under a blanket or behind a chair, or walk to the bathroom or kitchen, the sound will disappear.
RF stands for radio frequency and you can walk around the house and these headphones will still work. The transmitter will work through the walls and my wife loves being able to hear the tv anywhere in the house.
